Several pictures were also taken looking south - directly
down Central Avenue from the Nameoke intersection. This part of the
main strip, which runs about two long blocks, was once an important business
district in the town. On the east side, I remember a major auto parts
supplier (George Smith), an insurance agent in a corner store (Harry Vohel),
Ted's Far Rockaway Ford, Klass Buick (the store front became a carpet shop
after the dealer went out of business), and a liquor store - as well as
many other small "Mom and Pop" stores.
