On the east side of Central Avenue, The Smith Building (all
four stories) still stands as the corner store--facing northeast at the corner of Central and Mott. Most of the other
stores on that side of the street were missing entirely--including the RKO Columbia Theater, Neveloff Stationery/Toys
and the Pickwick Restaurant. That area which was torn out years ago to make an access to Beach 19th
Street is now fenced in and I saw junked automobiles behind large bushes and a parked cement mixer.
Here and there, a new building had been erected -- one even moved way back
on the property to allow for plenty of frontage. It looked very strange.
