The next stop was Beach 24th Street--and the remaining bungalows.
Most of the bungalows on both sides of the small street at the southern
end had been torn down. Tall wild grass had grown up in that place
and empty lots littered with trash were all that remained. The entrance
ramp to the boardwalk has also been removed. On the east side, I
saw a new large brick building which I was told was the WaveCrest Gardens
II. On the west side, some new building was in the process of being
built; there was also an abandoned speed boat lying on the side of the
road. Big chunks of street surface are missing. Entering the
lot (where bungalows had been) through a torn chain link fence, I was able
to take several photographs of the original WaveCrest Gardens buildings.
Driving back out (facing Seagirt) I could see that most, if not all, of
the remaining bungalows are now full-time homes and many had boarded-up
windows, even though people appeared to be living in them.
