I had not been in Far Rockaway since the fall of 1986, so I really had no idea what to expect.  I had seen some recent
photographs of a few major areas which were posted on the Far Rockaway High School Online Alumni Association website,
but other than that, I had only my memories of what the place looked like on which to rely.  Of course I expected some
major landmarks to still remain.

I headed down Peninsula Boulevard about 11:00 a.m. on a somewhat overcast morning -- drove west to Burnside and then
Sheridan, and onto Beach Channel Drive.  My first stop was at the corner of Nameoke and Beach Channel Drive.  The
first major business concern that I remember from my own childhood was the Pontiac dealership on the northeast corner.
It has been converted to an Elks Lodge and the dealership used car lot directly to its north is still being utilized as a used
car lot -- but without a showroom or a major car manufacturer's name.
